What to know about this collection
Garlic presents two problems: it sticks to your fingers and the smell lingers for several hours. Both drawbacks disappear as soon as you stop chopping it with a knife.
The garlic press crushes the clove and extracts a fine pulp that blends immediately into a sauce or marinade. Our zinc alloy and stainless steel model operates by pulling, with a non-slip grip, and is built for regular use. The garlic chopper, on the other hand, produces real small pieces rather than a puree, which is better suited for a stir-fry or a dish where you want to feel the garlic under your teeth.
In both cases, rinse immediately after use: dried garlic is the hardest to remove.
The garlic chopper formats in this selection
The polypropylene twist chopper chops the garlic when you turn the lid. Its container can then be used to keep the chopped garlic in the refrigerator. The transparent version, 7.5 cm in diameter, lets you see the chopping in real time.
The 200 and 400 ml rotary choppers chop garlic, onions, vegetables, and herbs by simply rotating. A more compact model with a rotary handle is designed for garlic and ginger.
The cord pull choppers, from 500 ml to 1 liter, activate their stainless steel blades with a pull on the cord, for garlic as well as vegetables and herbs. A compact version is reserved for garlic, herbs, and spices. The 520 ml crank chopper, with its 3 420 stainless steel blades, requires 5 to 20 turns depending on the desired texture, and is available in 900 ml with 5 blades.
For large quantities, the 1.5-liter vertical press chopper chops garlic, onions, and peppers with successive presses, without a crank. And if you prefer electric, the USB rechargeable mini choppers, including a 250 ml model, chop garlic in a few seconds and wirelessly.
Garlic press or garlic chopper: which one to choose?
The garlic press produces a fine pulp, ideal for a vinaigrette, marinade, or sauce. The garlic chopper produces small pieces, more pleasant in a stir-fry or slow-cooked dish. If you also chop onions and herbs, a cord pull or rotary chopper does it all.
Which format depending on the quantity of garlic?
For one or two cloves, the garlic press or twist chopper is enough. For a whole head or a garlic and onion mixture, switch to a 500 ml cord pull chopper. For a family marinade or a large sauce, aim for 900 ml to 1.5 liters. Beyond five or six cloves, the garlic press becomes repetitive and your wrist feels it: a bowl model, rotary, cord pull, or mini electric takes over. For vegetables and nuts, the other plug-free tools are gathered in our manual choppers.
Crushed garlic or chopped garlic does not taste the same
When you crush a clove with a garlic press, you break many more cells than when you cut it. Garlic releases more sulfur compounds and the result is significantly spicier:
- pressed garlic: perfect in a cold sauce, garlic butter, or a marinade that must dominate, often too strong in a slow-cooked dish;
- chopped garlic in small pieces: it keeps visible grains, colors less quickly in the pan, and burns less easily;
- sliced garlic with a knife: the mildest, almost sweet when cooked.
So start with the desired texture on the plate: the tool follows from it.
Frequently asked questions about the garlic chopper
Which manual garlic press to choose?
A garlic press must withstand pressure without bending: prefer a metal body and a grip that does not slip. This is the case of our manual zinc alloy garlic press, pull-operated, made of zinc alloy and stainless steel. Our article on the instructions for use of the garlic press details its use.
Is there an electric garlic chopper?
Yes: our USB rechargeable electric mini choppers chop garlic, herbs, and chili in a few seconds, wirelessly. We do not offer an electric garlic press: crushing into pulp remains a manual action.
What is called a garlic mill?
The term refers to a tool that you turn to chop garlic, in the same motion as a pepper mill. We do not have a garlic mill in the strict sense, but our twist and rotary choppers work on this principle: you turn, the blades chop.
Which manual garlic cutter for small pieces?
A twist chopper or a cord pull chopper: a few turns or a few pulls give regular pieces, and the more you insist, the finer they are. Our cord pull models are all gathered in the manual cord pull chopper selection.
How to remove the garlic smell from a chopper?
Rinse with hot water immediately after use, then wash with dish soap. If a plastic bowl retains the smell, run it through diluted white vinegar before a final rinse, and dry the parts before storing them: it is the trapped moisture that fixes the smell. On an electric model, the motor block never goes under water.
