What to know about this collection
What power should you choose for an electric chopper?
This is the one criterion you must get right. Power does not determine speed; it determines what the appliance can handle without straining.
| Power | What it processes without straining | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 300 W | Herbs, garlic, shallots, onions, soft fruits | Occasional use, cooking for one or two people |
| 300 to 800 W | Firm vegetables, nuts, cubed meat | The most versatile format, for families |
| 800 to 1500 W | Soups, smoothies, whipped cream, bowl chopping | Multifunction with hand blender |
| Over 1500 W | Ice, frozen fruit, grains, coffee, hard spices | 2000 W blenders and dry grinders |
An undersized motor overheats, slows down, and eventually shuts off in the middle of preparation. Power should therefore be chosen based on the hardest ingredient you plan to chop, not on average use. Our guide details what power to choose for an electric chopper for each food item.
How to choose your electric chopper?
Once the power is set, three details make the difference between a satisfactory appliance and a frustrating one.
Glass bowl or stainless steel bowl: what difference does it make in use?
Glass lets you see the texture during chopping, which helps prevent turning chopped food into purée by overdoing it. It resists odors and stains, a real advantage when switching from garlic to fruit compote. In return, it is vulnerable to impact.
Stainless steel withstands heavy use, does not break, and resists acidic foods such as tomatoes or lemons. The compromise is that you have to open it to check the progress of the preparation.
Neither is absolutely superior. If you are just starting out, glass is more forgiving of timing errors. If you chop often and in large quantities, stainless steel is the better choice. To learn more, compare electric choppers with glass bowls and all-stainless steel models.
How many blades do you need?
The number of blades matters less than their arrangement. Two blades on a single level stir the bottom of the bowl and leave whole pieces stuck to the sides. Four to six blades spread across two levels tackle the entire height, resulting in a uniform texture without having to scrape between pulses.
What capacity for what quantity?
A 2-liter bowl does not comfortably process 2 liters: beyond about two-thirds full, the ingredients no longer circulate and chopping becomes uneven.
For small daily quantities of garlic, herbs, and shallots, a compact format is sufficient: see our electric mini choppers, from 100 to 350 ml. For complete family preparations, aim for a 2-liter bowl. For batch cooking or freezing, go up to 3 or 5 liters.
Should you choose an electric chopper or a manual model?
The choice depends on frequency. For fewer than two or three uses per week on small quantities, a manual chopper does the same job, never breaks down, and is easier to store. Beyond that, an electric model saves real time on every preparation.
Electric chopper or meat grinder with grid?
An electric chopper with a bowl chops meat with rotating blades in a container: it is suitable for stuffings, meatballs, and homemade ground beef, and can also be used for vegetables and nuts. A meat grinder with a grid pushes the meat with an auger toward a knife and grid: it works continuously, maintains the same texture over several kilos, and allows you to stuff sausages. If you mainly chop large quantities of raw meat, switch to an electric meat grinder with a grid.
Frequently asked questions about electric choppers
What is the most powerful electric chopper?
In this selection, it is the 3,600 W, 2,500 g oscillating stainless steel grinder, reserved for dry ingredients: spices, grains, and dried herbs. For fresh foods, 2,000 W models with a 2 L bowl and 6 blades reach up to 45,000 revolutions per minute and accept ice and frozen fruit. Our article on the large chopper for large volumes helps you choose according to your volumes.
Stainless steel bowl or glass bowl: which one to keep?
Keep stainless steel if you chop often and in large quantities: it does not break, does not retain odors, and withstands acidic foods, with bowls from 300 ml to 5 liters in our selection of stainless steel electric choppers. Keep glass if you want to monitor the texture without opening the lid: see our glass bowl models.
Which large electric chopper to choose for a family?
A 2-liter bowl is suitable for preparing meals for a family of 3 to 5 people. Beyond that, the 800 W model with a 3-liter stainless steel bowl and 6 blades is designed for a medium-sized family, and the 5-liter model with 6 blades and 5 speeds for meals for several people and large quantities.
Can you chop raw meat with an electric bowl chopper?
Yes, with very cold meat cut into 2 to 3 cm cubes and by using short pulses. For large regular volumes or for stuffing sausages, an electric meat grinder with a grid remains more suitable.
Why does my chopper stop by itself?
Most often, it is a safety feature: the overload protection cuts the motor when it strains for too long, and several grinders also stop as soon as you open the lid. An overfilled bowl or an ingredient too hard for the available power is the usual cause.
