Chopping, mixing, grating: what are the uses for a multifunctional chopper depending on the model?
Publié le (mis à jour le )
A multifunction chopper combines in a single appliance what would normally require three utensils: chopping meat and onions, blending soup, and grating or slicing vegetables. For family cooking, the most versatile model is the 4-in-1 with a hand blender, around 1,000 W. For small quantities of garlic and herbs, a 350 ml USB mini chopper is sufficient. And if you don't want to use electricity, 12-to-16-in-1 manual vegetable cutters slice, grate, and chop with interchangeable blades.
This guide compares these four families using models from the shop, then details the criteria that make the difference: power, bowl capacity, accessories, and ease of cleaning.

What a multifunction chopper can really do, and what it cannot

The principle is simple: a motor or mechanism, and several accessories that attach to it. Depending on the family, a multifunction chopper processes:
- small quantities of raw meat (meatballs, fillings, tartare);
- vegetables (onions, carrots, zucchini, cabbage);
- herbs and garlic;
- nuts and dried fruit;
- on models with a hand blender, soups, coulis, and smoothies.
One appliance, one place in the cupboard, one bowl to wash.
You must also know its limits. A multifunction chopper does not have a continuous screw: it does not make sausages and chops meat in short bursts in a bowl, which is suitable for 300 or 600 g but not two kilos. It does not knead bread dough. And the hand blender of a multifunction appliance remains less powerful than a dedicated blender for ice cubes or very thick preparations. For everything else, it covers most of everyday cooking.
All the models mentioned in this guide are available in our multifunction chopper collection, which includes electric models with a hand blender, bowl choppers, rechargeable minis, and manual models with interchangeable blades.
Can a multifunction chopper replace a food processor?
For chopping, blending, and emulsifying, yes. It does not knead and does not have the capacity of a stand mixer. If your uses are limited to sauces, soups, vegetables, and ground meat, it replaces a food processor for a fraction of the price and space.
What is the difference between a multifunction chopper and a blender?
The chopper processes solid foods with fast blades in a bowl and produces a chopped texture. The blender processes liquid preparations. The multifunction appliance with a hand blender does both, but each less well than a high-end dedicated appliance. Our chopper or blender comparison helps you choose according to your dishes.
Hand blender, bowl, USB mini, manual: four uses compared
The table shows, for each family, a representative model from the shop, its capacity or power, its price, and the profile it is intended for.
| Family | Representative model | Power / capacity | Price | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multifunction with hand blender | 4-in-1 with 1000 W hand blender | 1,000 W, chopper bowl + hand blender + whisk | €110.90 | Family cooking: soups, chopping, emulsifying |
| Electric bowl chopper | 2 L multifunction stainless steel chopper with 4 blades | 2-liter stainless steel bowl, 4 blades | €49.90 | Meat, onions, and vegetables in large quantities |
| Rechargeable mini chopper | 350 ml USB mini chopper | 350 ml, rechargeable battery | €42.90 | Garlic, herbs, small quantities, small kitchens |
| Manual with interchangeable blades | 12-in-1 vegetable cutter with stainless steel blades | 12 blades, no electricity | €34.90 | Slice, grate, and chop vegetables silently |
The multifunction appliance with a hand blender: the most versatile
This is the family that justifies the word "multifunction". A motor unit, a chopper bowl for meat and vegetables, a hand blender for soups and sauces, and a whisk for whipping egg whites and cream. The shop offers four versions: the 1,000 W 4-in-1 with a hand blender, the 1,500 W 5-in-1 with Turbo function, the 4-in-1 with a 304 stainless steel bowl, and an entry-level 600 W version with Turbo. The Turbo function provides a burst of power to finish a texture; the variable speed allows you to start gently without spraying the contents of the bowl.
The bowl chopper and rechargeable mini: pure chopping
If you rarely blend but often chop, an electric bowl chopper does the job better: a 2-liter stainless steel bowl and four tiered blades chop 500 g of meat or three onions in a few pulses, with a more even texture than a multifunction appliance at the same price. At the other end, the 350 ml rechargeable mini chopper grinds garlic, parsley, ginger, and a shallot without taking out a heavy appliance, and stores in a drawer. These compact formats are detailed in our collection of electric mini choppers.
The 12-to-16-in-1 manual: slicing and grating without electricity
Multifunction vegetable cutters with interchangeable blades slice into rounds, grate, and cut into cubes and sticks, all over a collection tray. Twelve, fourteen, or sixteen blades depending on the model, at the same price. Nearby, the 3-in-1 rotary choppers with a crank and suction cup grate cheese and vegetables with interchangeable cones. They do not replace a motor for meat, but for raw vegetables, gratins, and salads, they do the same job as an electric one, silently and without a power outlet.
Before choosing, four points matter:
Power determines what the appliance can handle. Around 600 W, a multifunction appliance chops vegetables, herbs, and small quantities of tender meat. At 1,000 W and above, it processes large quantities of meat, hard nuts, and firm foods without overheating. Our article on the power of an electric chopper details the thresholds according to the foods.
Bowl capacity is chosen according to the number of diners: 350 to 500 ml for one or two people and aromatics, 1 to 2 liters for a family and fillings, soups, or advance preparations. A bowl that is too large chops small quantities poorly, because the blades do not reach them.
Accessories provide the actual functions: double stainless steel blade for chopping, hand blender for liquids, whisk for emulsifying, discs or blades for slicing and grating. Check that the ones you need are included, not just "compatible". Materials and maintenance finally: a bowl made of stainless steel or glass does not retain odors or colors from tomatoes or turmeric, and an appliance with all parts dishwasher-safe is one you can really use. To compare the models that meet these criteria, see our multifunction chopper collection.
How to properly use and maintain your multifunction chopper
Never fill the bowl beyond two-thirds: the motor will strain and the result will be uneven. Cut the meat into 3 to 4 cm cubes and work in short bursts of 2 to 3 seconds rather than continuously, to maintain control of the texture and avoid purée. Herbs chop better when well drained, and garlic with a pinch of salt that prevents it from sticking to the walls.
After use, rinse the bowl and blades immediately: dried residue doubles the cleaning time. The motor unit should never be submerged; a damp cloth is enough. Handle the blades by their shaft, never by the cutting edge, and let the seals dry before reassembling the bowl to preserve the seal.
Can you chop frozen meat in a multifunction chopper?
Only partially thawed, cut into small pieces, and added gradually, on a model of at least 800 W. Entirely frozen meat damages the blades and strains the motor of standard appliances.

If chopping alone is enough for you, without blending or grating, a bowl appliance does the same job more simply: all formats are available in our collection of electric choppers. To compare the models that chop, blend, and whisk, see our selection of multifunction choppers.
